The newly opened Heritage: A Native Plant Nursery is partnering with Planted Gardening Co. and Mt. Cuba Center to bring a hands-on gardening class to Sussex County this spring.

On Wednesday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to noon, homeowners and garden enthusiasts are being invited to attend “Build a Thriving Garden for Wildlife at Home,” a dynamic workshop focused on creating beautiful, ecologically functional landscapes.

Led by landscape designer Susan Wozniak of Planted Gardening Co., the class will guide participants through the essential principles of ecological gardening — showing how to transform everyday landscapes into thriving habitats that support birds, pollinators and other wildlife.

Participants will learn how to:

• Design gardens that provide food, water and shelter for wildlife;

• Apply the principle of “right plant, right place” for long-term success;

• Select high-performing native plants suited to local conditions;

• Incorporate keystone species that offer exceptional ecological value; and

• Create a landscape that is both low-maintenance and visually compelling.

“What if your garden could be both beautiful and a thriving habitat?” said Wozniak. “This class is about helping homeowners rethink their landscapes — not just as something to maintain, but as something that can actively support the environment while reducing long-term upkeep.”

The off-site program is part of Mt. Cuba Center’s broader educational mission to inspire a deeper appreciation for native plants and the ecosystems they support.

Hosting the class at Heritage marks a milestone for the newly opened nursery, which is dedicated to bringing high-quality native plants and ecological gardening resources to the coastal Delaware community.

“This collaboration reflects exactly what Heritage is about,” Wozniak said of her experience with Heritage Nursery. “Connecting people with the knowledge and plants they need to create meaningful, sustainable landscapes at home.”

The class is priced at $39 per participant.
