Hi all, we’ve just moved into a new property and it’s the first time we’ve actually had a garden so looking for some advice if anyone could help please

We bought some basic things and made a start trying to clear but what’s the best way try and tackle this lawn for the summer? Genuinely have no idea where to start, do I use weed killer, am I best off just digging up the whole thing and trying to start fresh?

Any pointers would be massively appreciated

Is that gravel beneath those weeds? Are you planning to use the garage for your car? Just from somebody who gardens for a living. A wee bit of advice. Get yourself a yellow builders trug from B&Q (cheap) and some decent gloves that allow you to actually move your fingers and feel what you’re doing. Makes a world of difference and you might even hate gardening a little less😉

What are you wanting from this garden, is probably the main starting point for thinking forwards. I’m not a professional, or even massively green thumbed. Just a normal bloke who likes his garden, and this is what I would do:

For the wildlife, the dandelions are great, bees love them. However there are quite a few patches there, which would be nice to be filled in.

If you want just grass, then I’d be buying something like The Lawn Pack, comes with deweeder, soil helper, and some grass seeds. You’d need to mow it low, scarify, aerate, then plant seed.

If you’re not bothered about perfect grass, I’d be more inclined to buy/build some planters along the fence edge for specific plants. Then buy something like a wildflower seed pack and aerate + scatter that over the whole lawn. You’d then end up with nice flowers of your choice on the left, and lots of stuff helpful for the wildlife along the middle.

For tha patio area, you’re never going to beat the weeds, so getting a jet wash and just blasting them out + picking them when young is what I usually do. Better than using lots of harsh chemicals in my opinion.

Well it depends what you want (lawn/plants/etc) and how much elbow grease you have?

The lawn will look remarkably better as a lawn if it just get a regular cut – weeds cant really survive being cut all the time.

That being said, that’s a hell of a collection of dandelions! A broad-leaf weed killer, designed for lawns is about the only answer to beat all of them.

You can get militant and spend a fortune.. but just a regular buzz over and some weedkiller will do most of the job for you.

For the lawn, you’ll want to mow it down as best you can, then reseed it. You can Google for details, but essentially you just throw some seeds/soil down and keep it watered. By the end of summer it should be looking healthier, the weeds have likely only taken control because there were bare patches and it wasn’t mown.

For the patio, you could use weedkiller or buy a patio scraper to get up the weeds. It looks like you may want to fill in the gaps between the stones once it’s clear.
