Went on a pleasant walk today and saw these things up in this tree. They look way too think to be spiders webs.

Eastern tent, caterpillars, I’m guessing that’s a chokecherry tree.

Tent caterpillar nests in a black cherry tree.

Tent caterpillars -these are bad and can spread in the trees, when they hatch they will damage the tree.

Tent caterpillars in a wild cherry. They will eat leaves. I have never seen a tree die from this.

Catalpa worms or similar, a caterpillar that gathers up. They make great fishing bait and go away on their own. Pretty harmless for the most part.

WebWorms. The scourge of pecan orchards everywhere. My grandma used to tie oily rags to the end of a long cane fishing pole and burn them out.

Harmless and they belong here! Won’t hurt the tree, and if it does, it wasn’t the worms

If you don’t want to burn them out or use spray, use a pole to tear the web bags open. Without a web to protect them wasps and birds will eat some of them.

I grew up in rural Northern Minnesota. When I was a kid, there was an outbreak so bad, my grandfather had to shovel them off the porch multiple times per day and throw them in a burn barrel just so my grandmother could get in and out of the house. I will never forget the popping noises as I rode my bike to the neighbor’s house; it was similar to when you put a playing card in your spokes.

Birds will pick at them until they’re gone.
