I like to trim those with a nice chainsaw. Roughly ankle high plus or minus a few inches is perfect.

Sorry, that’s not really treatable. It might continue living but it’s a ticking time bomb as rot will spread throughout the trunk and the top branches will get heavier. If this is anywhere near lived areas it’s best to replace it, otherwise it’s a liability and might hurt someone years down the line.

supposedly the wood is nice for woodworking / woodturning, so you could see if someone wants the wood after the tree is cut down.
