ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – The Missouri Botanical Garden announced on Monday that Dr. Peter Raven, former president of the center, died on Saturday at the age of 89.
Raven served as the president of the Missouri Botanical Garden for nearly 40 years while simultaneously holding the George Engelmann Professorship of Botany at Washington University.
Raven became the center’s president in 1971 at the age of 35, and when he retired in 2010, the institution had been transformed into a global hub for research, education, horticultural display and more.
“Peter Raven didn’t simply lead the Garden; he redefined what it could be,” said June McAllister Fowler, chair of the Garden’s Board of Trustees. “His vision elevated it to a world-class institution while deepening its roots in St. Louis. He believed the Garden should serve its community as much as the scientific world, and that legacy is visible across our city today.”
In 1988, Raven received the St. Louis Award to recognize his work in environmental conservation and his contributions to St. Louis.
