My city put in this young (6 ft) tree last year and after some harsh storms and sudden temperature changes I noticed this crack running vertically through the tree.

How likely is it to recover and anything I can do to help?

  1. You can wait for someone smarter than me to respond but here’s what I can say as someone who isn’t certified.

Problem starts with the tree having most of its life growth at the end – often called lions tailing. This causes weight to be heavy at the end where the branches are, especially in the wind. This causes it to sway harder than if it had more evenly distributed growth.

As for survival, best to try tying it with some stretch ties and see if the tree can compartmentalize the damage and survive with new growth. Hard to say what’ll happen without just trying (if you’re willing to try and wait)

More than likely she’s done for and best to notify the city. Maybe they can replace it.

My neighbors maple looked like this after it was planted in a windy area. 10 years later it’s nice and strong and just has a long vertical scar.
