Nebraska Public Media Digital Series Revisits Controversial 500-Mile Sculpture Garden
LINCOLN, Neb. (April 27, 2026) – A bold and hotly debated 1970s statewide sculpture project inspired Nebraska Public Media’s newest digital series. The first of seven episodes drops today on Nebraska Public Media’s YouTube channel, with others available for streaming weekly on Mondays through June 8.
Fifty years ago, Nebraska celebrated the nation’s Bicentennial in an unusual way, commissioning large-scale outdoor sculptures at rest areas along Interstate 80, loosely tracing the Oregon Trail. Eight sculptures were installed and seven remain standing.
As the original eight pieces of abstract 20th century art were installed, Nebraskans questioned why the designs did not depict the state’s pioneer history. Discussion ensued about the cost, what was aesthetically beautiful and why the work of Nebraska or Midwest artists was not represented. The legislature even entered the skirmish.
The new digital series offers a modern look at the sculpture project that was featured 50 years ago in the 1976 Nebraska Public Media (then Nebraska ETV) television documentary “500 Mile Sculpture Garden.” Through interviews, public meetings, and footage of the installations, the 1976 documentary reflected a statewide effort to bring art into everyday spaces.
The archival television program “500 Mile Sculpture Garden” will be rebroadcast Thursday, June 25 at 9 p.m. CT on Nebraska Public Media.
