Large oak tree (maybe too large?) in our small front yard. Yard is sloped towards the street so we get a lot of erosion and exposed roots. My water main also runs directly under this tree. Thanks in advance for any advice!

This tree could be the poster child of exactly what you want to see, how it should look.

I don’t see anything in this photo that could be improved upon except maybe putting some slack and cushion around the swing chain where it meets the branch so it doesn’t cut into the tree and kill the branch off, otherwise you’re good

‘Small’ front yard is large enough to easily fit a beautiful big oak tree. What makes a tree ‘too big’ according to you? Also, the roots look fine and without them you will find out the true meaning of erosion.

Leave it there until it starts to cause probs with the water main. Then route the line around the tree if/when that time comes.

That tree is worth 1,000x the inconvenience of maybe rerouting your water main one day.
