I've never used a trellis, at least in the appropriate way. I have one that is used for support for my orchid.

I've been looking on the sub but all the plants I see seem to have a lot of established growth.

TIA!

trellis are not necessary, it depends if you prefer your Hoya to climb or if you like it to be drooping

Some Hoyas ask for it by shooting a long vine that is clearly trying to find something to grab. Others are fine just trailing. Your Hoya will let you know what she needs if you don’t have anything planned for her yet

I have heard that the small leaf ones can trail but the big leaf ones need a trellis. The one in the picture looks kinda mid size, so I think you can go either way.

As soon as they start throwing out a long vine, you’ll want to give it support. With small Hoyas I’ll stick a skewer or chopstick into the pot to let it know there’s something there to grab onto. Without this, the vines will get really long spaces between the nodes, because the plant is reaching out to find support before it develops leaves.

While some Hoyas are willing to trail, the fact of the matter is that these are climbing/twining plants that REALLY only want to go up – in many cases aggressively so. Some types like Latifolia will only grow upward – if you let a vine hang down it will
abandon growth to that vine and focus its energy elsewhere.

  5. I use them to support the stems from bending and breaking or falling over. They grow well when supported by any means: stick, trellis wall or other plants nearby it will reach out for looking for stability. Depending on the hoya or vining plant, I think they look better wrapping around a trellis or support stick.

I gave up trellising all my Hoyas, I tried and it didn’t work for me, so I’m just leaving them to do whatever they want now.
