Had this guy inside near a window, but the top started to die out. Put him outside, now he isn’t happy either.
I’m good at other plants except this one and they’re my absolute favourite. Help me keep it alive.
FYI this is a SE balcony that gets sun in the am!

I’d venture to guess that it needs more light. My pearls live under a grow light that is on 15 hours a day and they do well.
If the soil is anything like the soil below it, I would change that now. You’re going to want a 60/40 grit/soil ratio. Perlite/succulent soil is your best bet. Also only bottom water. And only water when the little window on the side of the pearl indents a little bit. They will also be squishy. And when they start spilling out of the pot tuck the strings back in to keep the top nice and full
What do you mean exactly by the top dying out? Are whole stems dying, or individual pearls one by one? Would you say they turn more yellow and squishy or dried out like a raisin? Just by the photo, I assume the soil is too dense, deep and retains too much moisture – usually “string of” plants have a delicate and shallow root system. My next move would definitely be repotting into some grittier soil and laying out the healthy stems on top of soil, just slightly burried – what I can also see on the photo is that most stems are laying on top of each other instead. I would say the south east facing window isnt the problem, unless you see some bleaching 🙂 Good luck with your pearls!
