If you’re a regular coffee drinker, you’ve likely been discarding your used coffee grounds without a second thought. However, those leftover grounds are far more than mere kitchen waste — they’re actually an excellent way to give your garden a natural boost, particularly your lawn.
Many gardeners are aware of the benefits of using coffee grounds for roses and hydrangeas, yet few consider what they can do for grass. Whether you’re passionate about sustainable gardening or simply want a lusher lawn, applying coffee grounds can be a straightforward and eco-friendly improvement, according to specialists at Turf Technologies.
They said: “Not only can coffee revitalise us in the morning, it can also revitalise our lawns because of the minerals coffee contains – nitrogen and phosphorus.”

Used coffee grounds contain roughly 2.5% nitrogen, one of the most vital nutrients for healthy grass growth.
Even better, that nitrogen is slow-release, meaning it nourishes your lawn gradually without the risk of scorching it, as some synthetic fertilisers can.
But nitrogen is only the start, because adding coffee grounds to your lawn also improves the soil structure itself.
The grounds support beneficial microbes living within the soil, which assist with water retention, nutrient cycling, and overall soil health. This results in stronger roots, improved drainage, and greater drought resistance.
There’s also the added advantage that worms are attracted to coffee grounds. The experts said: “Earthworms eat the coffee grounds and, in return, aerate your lawn and encourage beneficial microbial activity.”
How to apply coffee grounds to lawns
It is recommended to use coffee grounds on your lawn between April and May as this is when the grass is actively growing.
You don’t need to save up buckets of coffee grounds. Scatter them daily or weekly to start feeding your lawn.
Let the used coffee grounds cool and dry off a little before using them. Sprinkle them over the lawn, aiming to apply about a cup per square yard of turf.
Water the area gently after dispersing the grounds. This will help them settle into the thatch and actually get down to the soil.
Take time to spread the grounds evenly rather than dropping clumps on the lawn. Alternatively, you can dump the grounds in several piles and then use a rake to spread them out over the desired area of cover.
The experts said to reapply the coffee grounds every month or two and enjoy a “thick, green turf”.
