Woke up this morning to a loud bang and found this branch had fallen off my walnut tree. Does anyone think it's still saveable?

I found this weird thing stuck to the trunk that looks like a shelf, and I have no idea what it is. The wood in the middle of the fallen branch feels soft, and there are insects inside. I also noticed that the smaller branches have a weird black circle right in the middle of the wood.

When I stand near the base, I can actually see the main trunk spinning/twisting a bit when the wind blows. If it’s saveable, I’d love to keep it. I would like some advice before I do anything.

Thanks!

That is a bracket fungus (possibly hoof fungus but I can’t tell from the pic and don’t know where you’re located). I suspect the fungus has led to the rot seen in the wood and cause the brittle fracture that you see where the branch failed. It looks like quite a substantial amount of brittle wood. If you look at where the rot/fracture is and where the fungus bracket is positioned. It would be reasonable to assume that a large portion of the tree structure is compromised and unsafe. It is highly possible that other portions if the tree fails. I would remove if it was me.
