Very new to carnivorous plants, I’ve got a Venus flytrap going and it’s going well so I thought I’d branch out. I wanted to grow butterworts (I think Mexican) and sundew (Drosera legrandi and drosera capensis) in the same 12” bowl essentially and one side would be the substrate the butterworts came with and the other side would be sphagnum moss and the two sundews. Is this possible? Or should I just stick to two different planters? It would look like the picture above with the butterworts mostly on the rock and maybe some in the substrate and the other half being sundews. The bowl is 12 inches across and about 4 inches deep.

Yes this would work. Be aware that once the sundews take off, they’ll likely seed themselves everywhere so you’ll have to do some editing to keep the pings from being overwhelmed. But that’s one of the fun things about pings and sundews – they are both pretty easy to propagate so it won’t be long before you have a lot of material to experiment with. Enjoy the process!

  2. I grew mine together for some time, and it worked, but keep in mind that both are going to want to take up quite a bit more room than you initially give them. My first ping has become roughly 20 of them, and the capensis I started with is now a cluster of four of them, not counting the babies it’s had elsewhere.

So, yeah, it can be done, but be prepared to shuffle things occasionally.
