I’m new to growing dahlias and of course have been reading online about all the diseases to look out for and have been getting worried about growing diseased plants. I’m looking for help determining if this young one may be diseased or looks normal. Any help is appreciated!

This is an automatic reminder regarding r/dahlias Rule 3:

When reasonable*, posters should make a good-faith effort to identify which variety/varieties are shown in their photo(s). If you don’t know for certain, please say so. Someone will usually know!

*Common-sense exceptions to this rule will be honored, such as if the photo does not contain a blossom, or if your photo contains large volumes (such as in wide field shots).

If you’ve already done this, thank you! No further action required.

If not, please add a reply to this comment and confirm if you know the name of your dahlia variety/varieties shown in the photo(s). Alternately, if you’re uncertain of the variety name(s), it’s ok to say that, too.

This is a virus, probably dahlia mosaic virus. Unfortunately, the infection appears severe enough that the plant should be discarded.

  3. Looks more like bug pressure to me but I could be wrong. I have a lot that have looked like this and after bug spray have recovered with normal foliage

From what it seems like in the picture, every yellow area appears to be damaged. Those are some larger sized chunks missing, crushed leaf tissue and large piercings. I think it’s animal damage or a maybe a combination of animal damage and insect damage. I’ve also had new plants look like this that were accidentally stepped on.
