Bought a house a year ago and I'm starting to look at what's in the garden that I like and what not to keep. I like the tree but it's stuck in the ground after it's roots have long pierced through the pot, can I remove the pot and potentially replant (I'm talking in late autumn/early spring, not now) or will I either have to cut it down or make piece with the fact that this one is stuck in a pot in an unfortunate location?

You need to box it first or the roots will just keep circling

Removing the pot to get an idea of the root size would help.

Based on the pot size and trunk caliper, that poor thing is probably suuuuper root bound and will take serious root work to make plantable

It’s clearly very happy where it is. I’d leave it and design a garden around it to hide the pot.

It probably has blown out the bottom of that pot and is now rooted in the Earth.

Yeah so I would break the pot first and see what you’re dealing with and check the roots.

  7. Root collar excavation? If it’s really rooted just cut the pot away and start digging the dirt out looking for root flare.

  8. Cut the pot in place and see the damage. Worse case you end up leaving in place and opening some roots and just adding some soil around it

What kind of tree and what is the unfortunate location?

Just ask it nicely to move about 20’.
