This was absolutely fantastic and I’m a fussy old cow! For anyone interested in the reality of daily Edo life from social hierarchies to the arts, commerce, architecture and history I would highly recommend Amy Stanley’s ‘Stranger in the Shogun’s City’. Historically it is from the 1830’s to 50’s, so very much towards the end of Hokusai’s life, but it is wonderfully evocative and educational. Weirdly I just finished it this morning, perfect timing for this podcast!
One of the most familiar and famous images yet I find it incredibly overrated and just a picture that doesn’t do anything for me! 😅 🌊

Would you have any info regarding the mountains in Hokusai's art? I know about Mt.Fuji but some historians mentioned that it could be a Mt.Ararat die to Christianity spread in Japan.Any info appreciated 👍
