I am learning how to keep indoor plants. I’m new at this so I’m surely doing something wrong. I left them in their temporary pots at first and kept them in the shade in my backyard for 1-2 weeks bc I heard you don’t want to change their scenery too sudden to prevent shock. As each one started to look sad, I repotted them one by one over the course of 2 weeks. Each time I repotted them into their new pots, they quickly sprang back to life, alive and happy they rode on this high for two more weeks..
Enter my problem. I would turn on the LED lights and open the window at 10am every day and turn the lights off around 10pm every day. (Window is south facing since I can’t do north facing since that window is unavailable.)
Now half of them are still doing fine, but the other half are looking real sad. I will post pictures of the unhappy plants and not include pics of the ones that are doing fine. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but I can tell you that every time I water them, the soil stays moist almost indefinitely so I’ve been watering them about once every 7-10 days and even then, the soil still feels slightly moist, but not entirely dry either. So I need help determining if I need to water more or even less? Do I need to take them out of the pot and resoil them to revive them or just change watering habits?
My watering style is to add water until water collects at the bottom of the dish. I wait 30 minutes for the plants to absorb that water. After 30 mins, if water is still in the dish, I remove the excess water to prevent root rot. I’m not sure if there is more that I should be doing to prevent root rot. I’m not sure why the soil isn’t fully dry by day 10, but we keep our house temperature between 72-78 degrees throughout the day. Location is Southern California.
Could it be that I am not watering enough and 7-10 days is too long? I’m just trying to avoid over watering and the constant moist soil had me watering with caution.
P.S. the rosemary isn’t doing too great mostly bc of a pest infestation I think. It was covered in small webs so I treated it for spidermites with an herb-safe insecticide(Garden Safe Insecticidal soap). Instructions said it was safe for ingestible plants, but half the leaves are all a gross brown now. No new webs though so I guess that is good. Maybe I over saturated it with the insecticide and that’s why?
