We are almost ready to fill the joints on our flagstone walkway.
We want the joints to be solid. Not intersted in loose gravel, ground cover, etc.
Any alternatives to gator dust? I’ve heard of some DIY compounds using Portland cement. Anyone have experience with that?
Most of our joints are 2”. Largest ones up to “5.

Gorilla glue mixed into bulk sprinkles from Sam’s Club.
fill the gaps with river rock then add polymeric sand
Nothing
Good old DG, polymeric sand always falls apart eventually
You could fill it 3/4 of the way with normal sand then top it with poly-sand
You can use gravel fines but honestly at this point you’ve spent the money. Just do it right
Fill it up with stone dust or whatever is nice and fine. I would not use any round pebbles because they won’t stay put and hurt your feet.
A cold chisel. Those gaps …
Moon River rock.
More flagstone and cut them in closer
Every product has its drawbacks. The only thing you can count on is none of them are going to last, especially on a walkway. And it all depends on how you prepped underneath. Cuz if you didn’t do a good job with that no matter what you use you’re going to get moisture and water trapped underneath it which will break down the different products and break down your stones and possibly break down your base.
You are looking for something that doesn’t exist and if you use the wrong thing you’re gonna hate it.
Gator dust isn’t appropriate for gaps this large anyways. You’re basically looking for mortar set stone but I can already tell your base material isn’t correct for mortar either. Just use decomposed granite or something more interesting like 3/8 clean limestone chip rock with some color to it. Don’t get gravel. Get angular crushed rock.
Edit: also don’t be cheap. It’s one of those things where you either spend the money and time doing it right or you pay for it twice.
I put soil and planted dichondra. Love it
In this case, more flag stones should be used to fill in the gaps.
Unicorn bones
Stone dust
Dirt+moss
Ramen noodles
Seal up some bigger cracks with foam or adhesive first
Doesn’t look like you really fit the rocks properly to the space. You have to get them a bit closer
I use type s mortar right out of the back. Sweep on both axis and make sure to sweep off as much as you possibly can. Using a hose nozzle gently wash the stone clean with as little water as possible. Allow to firm up for 5/6 hours and then wet down again. Joints end up just below flush but very strong and with no weeds over time.
If you can’t afford to do it right the first time, you certainly can’t afford to do it again.
The blood of your enemies!
Ash from the fire place or barbecue
I ripped my flagstones out, they gathered dirt and weeds and became trip hazards.
