The Pine River-Backus Community Garden, located behind the high school (north) near the school forest, is now accepting registrations for garden plots and raised beds.

Whether you are new to gardening or have some experience, this is a great place to grow. Renting a plot is an easy way to get started and learn from others.

Gardening is always a learning process, and a lot of that happens just by working in your own space and connecting with other gardeners.

All garden spaces are in full sun and the area is fully fenced to help protect from deer and other animals. Hoses are available throughout the garden for watering, and compost, leaf mold, soil nutrients and tools are included with your plot fee.

Available options include:

15- by 15-foot plots for $20.Raised beds (4- by 8- by 3-foot) for $15.Raised garden circles (various sizes) for $15.

We will be holding an orientation from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at the garden site. Gardeners who are already registered are expected to attend.

Anyone who may be interested in renting a plot is welcome to come check it out, see the space and chat with current gardeners. New gardeners can also register that evening. We would love to see some new faces there.

The garden follows organic and natural growing practices, meaning no chemical fertilizers, and uses a no-till approach to support healthy soil. All gardeners agree to follow these guidelines.

Additional features include a shared orchard and a hoop house for extended season growing. There are also occasional group work days throughout the season to help maintain the garden and take care of shared needs.

Gardeners and community members can also use the Seed Library at the Pine River Public Library, open from noon to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Seeds are free to use, with the goal of saving and returning seeds at the end of the season to help keep the library stocked.

The Community Garden was started in 2010 and continues to be supported by a group of local volunteers in partnership with PR-B Community Education. Meetings are open to all gardeners.

Plot sign-up is through PR-B Community Education at

or 218-587-2080. For more information, visit the Pine River Community Garden Facebook page or call the Community Ed office.
