Today we’re visiting the Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum here in Balboa Park in San Diego, CA. The garden celebrates the friendship between San Diego and its sister city Yokohama in Japan. It first opened to the public in 1991, and it’s one of those places that feels peaceful the moment you walk in.

The garden covers about 10 acres, so there’s plenty of space to explore as a family and just wander through at your own pace. While we’re here, we’re excited to see the koi collection, check out the beautiful plants throughout the garden, and of course visit the Bonsai Garden. Come join us as we explore this beautiful garden.

  1. I’ve heard of Balboa Park before but i didn’t really know what it was like there. Seems like a variety of things, and this place looks so peaceful especially compared to how many people were in the parking lot! I would’ve gotten sidetracked at the bonsai trees too. Lol fascinating! Great video.

  2. I didn’t know there was a Japanese Gardens there- as you know I love places like that! BTW Karate Kid was my FAVORITE movie for many years!! 🥰

  3. What a cool, relaxing place.
Those Bonsai Plants were incredible. We attempted to grow one years ago…..
We didn’t have the patience for it 🤪
Loved “Karate Kid” the original one….
    NOT the pathetic remake!!!!!!

  4. The Bonsai trees look so amazing & those Koi are huge! I enjoy gardens like this, there so peaceful. I'm glad it's springtime now, so ready after the crazy winter we had.

  5. Really cool Japanese garden guys!! LOL fat koi fishes, they're living the life! Definitely some Karate kid vibes here! Those bonsai trees are cool, but yeah, lots of maintenance hehe..

  6. Definitely giving karate kids vibes 😅 “so fat their laying on the bottom on the water. 4:56 😮 150 years old bonsai tree, that’s crazy. Tranquil and peaceful yes and yes!! 8.1 not bad Nice tour! Happy Saturday!!-RG

  7. That intro 🤣 I just uploaded a garden video, too. It must be spring! The pruning of Japanese gardens is insane. It always impresses me!

  8. Hello Carl,
    These are stunning gardens.
    Fat dishes 😂😂😂
Japanese 🇯🇵 theme is beautiful 😍
great Bonsai, they are amazing. 🤩
The Cherry Blossoms would be awesome to see.
Loved coming along these lovely gardens 🌸🌸🌸

  9. We have been to that Japanese Friendship Garden in spring. The cherry blossom trees are so beautiful. But it even looks stunning in winter. Jack enjoyed all the Karate Kid references. That was one of his favorites back in the day. Thanks for taking us back to San Diego!

  10. Those are big fish. Love that you included the Karate Kid. And I don't think I've ever seen a bonsai tree in real life. Great video, so pretty.

  11. Super pretty! Haha Rosalie finds a slug! And I'm pretty sure your nephew did the 6/7 thing. Although it was muted he did the hand motions. Kids these days! 🙂

  12. That’s a very impressive Japanese garden! I liked your detour with the bonsai; I think it was the most entertaining and interesting part of the video.

  13. The bonsai trees were my favorite – I live living plants but I don’t really have much of a green thumb. 🙄

  14. We went to the Cherry Blossom festival last month and the cherry blossoms were at 40% bloomed! But it is the busiest I had ever seen the garden. So we went again the following weekend and it was basically almost fully bloomed. It’s like you’re in a whole different country! You’ll have to come with me next Spring cuz it’s super pretty when you see all the colors of the flowers 🌸
