On April 16, the Montcalm Area Master Gardener Association donated seven books each to seven of the Montcalm County libraries in memory of or in honor of seven of our Master Gardeners.
The books are: “Pollinators of Native Plants” by Heather Holm, “A Northern Gardener’s Guide to Native Plants” by Lorrine Johnson and Sheila Colla, and five children’s books, from the backpack explorer. The titles are “On the Nature Trail,” “Bird Watch,” “Bug Hunt,” “Discovering Trees” and “Rock Hunt.”
The Master Gardener Association’s goal by donating these books is to help educate the members of the community in a healthy, science-based and environmentally friendly way. They want people to be aware of the environment and ecosystem around them. Their commitment as a group is to educate and beautify our County.
The Montcalm Area Master Gardener Association maintains four gardens in the Greenville area: Peter Rabbit at the Flat River Library, Flat River Historical Museum Victorian Garden, M-Tec Garden behind the Stanley P. Ash Building and the Pollinator Garden behind Greenville Floral; and two on the Montcalm Community College Campus, the Heritage Village Gardens and “All That Flutters,” next to Heritage Village.
The MSU Extension Master Gardener Program is an adult horticultural education and volunteer leader training program committed to improving science-based horticultural information in the communities throughout the state.
“The Montcalm County Master Gardeners have beautified and educated our community for years through their programs,” says Stef Reed, director of the Flat River Community Library in Greenville. “The Peter Rabbit garden in front of our library has displayed their handiwork and expertise, and their Master Gardeners have conducted enriching, hands-on activities for kids and adults in their outreach. We have been delighted in recent years to receive their newest contribution to community horticultural, donations of carefully chosen books to all the Montcalm County libraries, with a focus on native plant gardening. They always do a wonderful job of selecting and providing fun and engaging titles to catch the eyes of the next generation of growers.”
