Spreading compost today and found this baby. Thought vole, but not sure. Put it back in the bin for mom to find. Anyone know what it is or if it'll be okay?
Newborn rat from the look of it I think. Or a vole is possible.

Too big to be a mouse. Nose isn’t pointy enough to be a mole. I’m going with baby rat

Could be a vole

When I get them in my compost they are baby chipmunks.
They burrow in the compost mostly because of the warmth.
They look exactly like that, and I’ll typically have a few in the area.

Dear sir
I believe that the small animal that you held is a savage, successful and prolific killer of worms and grubs known as a “mole”
You should release it where you found or it will die

Could be bunny if you have those around. We found something similar looking and it ended up being a bun!

I had a closer look at it
I think that if you live in East Africa its probably Heterocephalus glaber or the naked mole rat

A shrew?

Biggest indicator here for me would be the tail or lack thereof which isn’t visible in this photo. It’s really hard to identify baby rodents unless you’re a small animal rehabber or some other kind of rodent expert.
Don’t think it’s a rat, cos I’ve had litters of rat babies and this doesn’t look translucent enough to be a rat pup to me, but I could be wrong as I’ve never had a wild one. Mostly I think it’s not a rat because even when I’ve had black/agouti litters, they have had a distinctive pink tinge on the hands and noses. This looks uniform in color, with only a tiny bit of variation, which is more unusual. In my experience, by the time their skin is more opaque like this, the ears have formed into little nubs. But also, rats are born with cute Lil bald tails. So if it has a cute Lil bald tail, could be a rat, or even a squirrel. Lack of tail would point towards something else, bunny/mole/what have you
