I planted these super snappy peas at the end of March, but they don’t seem to have grown much. My neighbor also planted some around the same time and his are already almost 2 feet tall. What am I doing wrong?

Do they have anything to climb up?

They grab onto stuff around them and climb upward. If you add a pole near it, so that the plant is touching it, it will send out little legs to wrap around the pole! 🙂

Some peas are bush varieties others are vine. Looks like you have vines and they need something to climb.

Edit: you could prpbably use wooden stakes with a nylon trellis net since peas dont weigh much.

I had trouble getting mine to grab what I wanted them too at first so I used some twine around my main trellis posts

get stakes and twine and built them a ladder to climb

My peas are always slow to start. They should start accelerating in the next two weeks

They are looking for something to climb up 🙂

Support. They need support to climb up.

  9. My raised bed peas are the one thing I use cheap round tomato cages for. I’ve also just jammed tree branches into the ground for them.

I run bamboo stakes (about 1/2” dia., 3’ long) about every 3-4’ in maybe 8” rows and tie twine lines at about 3 levels, say 6”, 12”, & 24” off the ground to give the peas something to climb. I can generally roll the twine up with the stakes and store those when I’m done with peas.

I see some wire there for them to climb. You might need to train them, which means loosely tying them to the wire and looping their climbing tendrils around it.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of soil are you using??

Don’t be shy helping them find the lattice or wire or whatever you choose for them to climb up. I weave them through the bottom of my chicken wire to start them off and they do the rest. They sit almost right underneath it so don’t have to go searching for it too hard. Liquid fertilise and watch them flourish! Good luck.
