The sun is warming the ground up and lawns are coming back to life. The month of April is a real turning point for lawn grass. The conditions are right for improving the lawn as grass seed germination can be as little as two weeks.
A sowing of grass seed and a quilt of lawn dressing or topsoil will establish quickly if watered each day. The current condition of a lawn depends on many factors, including drainage, light and general care. This time of year is perfect for dealing with issues that may hinder and prevent the lawn from being lush during spring and summertime. The ground is still soft enough to repair issues with the lawn.
If a lawn is in bad condition with lots of patches, moss and weeds, then it will need a full lawn care procedure. The moss and weeds need to be removed with a weed and moss granular treatment first, so it leaves a lawn with patches that can be repaired.
The repair work requires scarification, aeration, grass seed sowing and lawn dressing. This clears the lawn of thatch and moss, reduces compaction, repairs patches and adds nutrients to the soil.
A lawn that is moderate to good is likely to have some kind of regular care. The lawn may only require a weed and feed granular treatment, and bare patches repaired with grass seed and lawn dressing as a quilt.
The lawn can be cut on a high cut as we want to keep the grass healthy, whilst still quite early in the lawn mowing season. A very low cut can stress grass and increase the chance of disease and patches being created.
The month may bring frequent showers and rain that keeps the lawn watered, if this does not happen we need to keep the grass seed moist to prompt and assist germination.
A lack of water can leave grass seed dormant until some consistent rains and moisture trigger germination, so watering is imperative to achieving germination sooner.
Once the new grass has reached between 6cm and 10cm tall it can be cut on a high cut. The first cut is high because we don’t want to shock the new grass and cause it to suffer.
Once the grass is about four weeks old it can be left to mother nature, however, only give a high cut during longer dry spells. All of this is to try and achieve a happy lawn for the spring and summertime.
