And you can't really even see all the red oak seedlings. They blend in. This is mostly beech and cherry.
This is the result of a combination of a mast year, followed by a cold winter with deep lingering snow that protected all the seeds, nuts, and acorns from the squirrels and deer.
Do the deer eat any of them? No. They go after my baby baptisia. Jerks.

I have thousands of sugar maple seedlings this year. It’s crazy!
I have quite a few too, lots of pine. Hemlock trees produced a ton of cones probably due to drought stress. To that end I have quite a few pine siskins sticking around for the spring, they have a good food source. Unfortunately the hemlock is bad at germinating so very few actually even begin to grow.
I found quite a few seedlings myself in Zone5b. I’m going to mark/stake a few of them volunteers and do my best to preserve them.
I must have 10+ saplings in my yard currently that weren’t around last year. I’m tempted to just let them ride and see which ones turn out to catch. Somehow they all ended up at the fence lines so will all need relocation if they get large enough.
Where did you get a picture of my yard?
😄 My beeches were prolific last year and now my backyard is a blanket of seedlings!
My yard looks the same, except my seedlings are entirely invasive Norway maples 😭
Yeppppp our yard is covered in Norway maple seedlings, ugh. Is it like this every year?!
My yard is full of invasive Siberian Elm seedlings. They have taken over my garden beds. I plan to spend tomorrow pulling them up. I am not looking forward to it.
Thank you! I’ve been wondering why there are so many maple seedlings on my yard.
Goes to show how bad the forest wants to reclaim its territory.
Chinese pistache for me. Is smtg going on this year? I’ve never seen so many.
