Hi all! I have a cherry blossom cutting here. Any advice on the process of propagating it is greatly appreciated, and I do have root hormone to put on it. Should I put the cutting in dirt or water?
Well hey there fellow cherry blossom lover! You got yourself a nice looking type there!
As for how to go about propagation of it… well that’s where we get into some choppy waters… cherries taken from cuttings this time of year as hardwood is a no go… 🙅♂️… they pretty much will almost always succumb to dehydration… the tissues in the hardwood aren’t meant to take that level of water demand without being connected in… I know sounds bleak right? Well not all hope is lost… that new growth at the top… that there is soft wood yet and later in the season it will hit semi hardwood… if you would like my advice and opinion… put that nice flower in a vase and enjoy it till it falls off its a very nice one! Then go visit that tree in a month or two when that new growth is far longer… take that and use it for a cutting… you will have far better success… put it in peat moss and keep it moist and in the shade… it will take a long time… like 2 months… but you will see results that way!
Ps. These will not start growing in water… unless done as air layering were still connected to the tree itself…
