With temperatures beginning to rise, now is the perfect time to venture outside and tackle those long-neglected garden chores. Many homeowners will be directing their attention towards patios and driveways that have accumulated months of dirt, algae and moss throughout the winter months.
For most people, the immediate reaction is to reach for a pressure washer. However, according to patio specialist Bill Jarvis from Premium Paints, this could actually do more damage than good. Instead, he recommends a straightforward household product costing just a few pounds that can clean outdoor surfaces more safely and effectively.

Bill pointed out that while pressure washers are widely used, the sheer force of the water can cause unseen damage to outdoor surfaces.
He said: “Pressure washers feel satisfying to use, but they can strip the surface layer from certain paving materials. The jet can also remove the sand between slabs or block paving, which is what helps keep everything stable.”
Over time, this can leave patios uneven and make it considerably easier for weeds and moss to return. Fortunately, there’s a highly effective and budget-friendly alternative – biological washing powder. This tackles the problem differently by breaking down the organic material responsible for causing outdoor stains.
The enzymes contained within biological detergents are specifically designed to break down substances such as grease, food and organic matter.

Bill added: “That means algae, moss and general grime are exactly the sort of things it can tackle.”
How to clean your garden patio
Restoring your patio to a pristine state couldn’t be simpler. Pour warm water into a bucket and mix in one scoop of biological washing powder.
Apply the solution across your patio or driveway and allow it to sit for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Work over the surface using a firm outdoor brush, then wash away with a garden hose.
Bill added: “Giving the detergent time to sit is the key part. It allows the enzymes to start breaking down the dirt before you scrub, which makes the whole process much easier.”
A box of bio washing powder is available at Waitrose for £3.35, making it a remarkably cost-effective solution.
He notes that this approach is considerably kinder to a wide range of common paving materials, including concrete slabs and block paving.
Bill explained: “With pressure washing, you’re relying purely on force. This method lets the cleaner do the work first.”
For particularly persistent stains, he suggested repeating the detergent treatment as opposed to resorting to vigorous pressure washing. He added: “Two gentler cleans are usually far better for your patio than one very harsh one.”
