Ive got the plugs shown in the image. Trying to connect (2) 55 gallon rain barrels. Ive tried kits like this but they're garbage and leak – the threads / plastic are too flimsy and jump when trying to screw together.
Any idea what sort of pipe is used in the image with the question mark? The plugs are threaded on the inside but it appears like they just rammed a pvc pipe between the 2 barrels. Not sure how they sealed it together.
I appreciate any advice.

I’d use a pair of king nipples and a hose , probably Gates Green Stripe. It’ll give it some flexibility, so it won’t try to crack –
I think a hard connection is a bad idea. Might be better to use something flexible in case something moves.
Always put a bend in pipe instead of a straight line. That little bit of flexibility can make all the difference.
Have a similar setup using a connection hose for washing machines
I think PVC fittings fit some of those black fittings (vague memories of some work and some don’t). If it isn’t leaking I wouldn’t mess with.
But if you must, I would buy a piece of hose and hose clamps to fit those fittings. Maybe some plumber’s putty for the threds. They look higher quality than the fittings in the link.
Uniseal! I just used them for a radial flow solid separator for my pond. Relatively cheap online and all you need is a hole saw.
You need nut and tail type connections with a nut and rubber washer on the inside, the hard thing is getting the nut and washer onto the thread inside the barrel if you only have a small opening at the top. If you have the sort of barrel where the whole top comes off it is much easier. I also use a bit of silicon sealant to make sure it won’t leak.
