I’ve had these for years now and tried notching the big one once maybe 2 years ago, not much happened with that. I’m thinking I’ll be brave and try pruning the tops. (I’m terrified).

For both, I’m thinking I first cut the tops off, so just about where the leaves end and let that top part dry and then propagate it. Tips and tricks welcome here!

I’m wondering though, should I do another prune half way down what’s left? The long bare stems bug me and I think if I cut that in half as well, I might be able to get some leaves and growth on the middle parts of each cut. What do you guys think?

You’ll notice the big plant is super bare in the middle there so I’m hopeful it’ll be OK with some care.

I’m also thinking that this year when I’m done pruning and propagating, I’ll repot them as well, I’ll do a layer of clay balls at the bottom and the top for some aeration. But open to suggestions bc I’m seeing posts that say to mix clay balls into the soil but other articles that say to only put a layer in the bottom of the pot.

Any insight is super helpful!

P.S. please excuse the laundry on the side.

Get them out of that corner and right in front of a window. They need as much light as possible. Then give them a month or probably two to recover and then prune aggressively, probably to below the height you want it to bush out at. They LOVE a prune. You can prop that top section. If the soil isn’t too bad I’d hold off repotting until it’s recovered a few months after the pruning.
