A home garden can help a family save hundreds of dollars during the warmer months, but just getting started buying plants can be expensive. That’s where one local nonprofit comes in to help. The Kansas City Community Garden’s Tomato Days sale kicked off on Thursday with around 100,000 warm season plants and a large variety of seeds. Shoppers can buy vegetable and herb plants at a reduced cost to ensure that all families can experience the benefits of growing their own food. “You know at Kansas City Community Gardens we want everybody to enjoy fresh food,” said Jennifer Meyer, executive director at KCCG. “And we know that for some people, gardening is the way that some people do that. So, it’s our mission to make gardening affordable, accessible, get resources into people’s hands, and get skills and knowledge out in the community.” The sale is only open to members of the community garden, but memberships can be purchased on site at the sale. The type of membership you have determines the cost per three-pack of plants. Shoppers can purchase up to 30 vegetable plants and 2 herb plants per variety. With that said, they recommend you bring a box or container to carry all of your plants. The Tomato Days sale continues Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
