Adam Frost has hit back at a complaint aimed at him and Monty Don regarding a beloved gardening tool. Adam is a much-loved regular on BBC Gardeners’ World, appearing alongside such favourites as Carol Klein, Joe Swift, Frances Tophill, and, of course, lead presenter Monty — who has been at the helm since 2003.
Adam and Monty clearly understand the importance of quality gardening tools; indeed, when asked if he had a favourite that he “couldn’t manage to do without”, Adam revealed they both share a fondness for one particular implement.
It seems that he and Monty both use a Dutch planting spade, explaining that it’s the one tool that he gets “asked about”. He added that, although he splurged £60-plus on it, that was 15 years ago.

He was then asked what the tool is particularly useful for, to which he replied on the Talking Gardens podcast: “Everything!”
Adam went on to say: “It’s the most sort of multi-purpose thing that I’ve got. You can use it to chop stuff, you can get it underneath stuff, you can slice with it. It’s yeah…it’s just great, absolutely great.
“They moan…they don’t think that Monty and I use it in the right way ‘cos apparently it’s not designed for Monty and I, which is…”
He was questioned about what he was doing “wrong”. Adam replied: “Yeah, I don’t know. I’m not really that worried, but I said, ‘Well, it works!’ They said, ‘Yeah, but it wasn’t really designed for you guys with your hands,’ and this, that and the other.
“I said, ‘Well, it works, and you seem to be selling quite a lot of them because we’re using them’.”
Adam’s career has taken him from working in a parks department and teaming up with former Gardeners’ World host Geoff Hamilton to creating show gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Earlier this year, however, Adam shed light on one of the most difficult periods of his life and how health issues, Covid isolation, and his workload left him feeling like his “life was unravelling”.
In his book For The Love of Plants, he wrote: “During lockdown, like so many, we as a family had our challenges. Mrs Frost was really poorly, and so too was our youngest daughter.
“Then, just as we got through that, I caught Covid and shut myself away for 10 days to quarantine.”
Adam continued: “During my isolation I started to feel disconnected, as if my life was unravelling. I spent a lot of time looking out of the window at the vast garden I’d created, and the only thing that comforted me was music.”
Catch BBC Gardeners’ World tonight (Friday, April 24) on BBC 2, from 8pm to 9pm.
