Hello tree enthusiasts! We think a semi truck backed into this King Crimson Maple. Cracking is visible down the trunk and is deeper than the outer bark also broke off a larger branch. Landscaper is recommending removal. Would it make any sense to consult an arborist or is the tree unlikely to survive?

Thanks in advance!

You could cable and brace it if you are that attached to it!

Backed into? Pretty sure it could have slammed into it at 50 mph and not cracked it like that. It’s probably just on its way out, it’s an ornamental that isn’t going to live near as long as your native maples.

    That’s not a Crimson King. It’s a plum.

I would call an ISA certified arborist that focuses on tree preservation and see what they recommend. An in-person look is really the only way to know.

From the photos it looks like something you could cable and brace (also probably structural pruning to reduce weight, since these trees often have weak attachments), and enjoy the tree for years.

Looks like a spiral fracture. Easy bolting job. Small tree = low risk tree. Good candidate for preservation.
