Thanks Amy. I'm in the grampians regions and earlier this week I was wondering what I could start growing. So nice timing. My zucchini and tomatoes produced so late in season that my regular timing is a bit out. I have terribly compacted clay soil and have changed to growing in bags and raised beds. Initially I dug felt bags with good soil into the clay layer and brassicas did better than last season but are still struggling. The young citrus trees are in a felt bag that sits inside green 45ltr bags on top of the soil. I have never gardened this way before but I never before had a compacted clay soil to deal with. I'm 82 and moved 8 years ago to grampians region. The first year most of my plants, many flowers, just fell over mid season before I realised they could not penetrate the clay . I spread 400 bales of straw where I planned vegie garden and berry/citrus plot and just left the garden alone for 3 years whilst working inside the house. I'm still on a steep learning curve and every year I'm a little further ahead than last year. About to get the garlic, broad beans, onions and radishes in next week. I have so many seeds/ seedlings on the go… I am hoping to have some luck with brassicas this year.. I can get them to seedling size and then usually nothing after that. I have a heap of various flowers on the go – some in ground and some in pots and some I'm raising seedlings… cosmos, zinnia, sweet pea, marigold, nasturtium etc… I still have bush beans in the garden that are flourishing and some late cucumbers that I'm hoping will still fruit… oh I have some late sunflowers too… My sweet peas got planted this week.. I amended the soil after summer and got those in… I need some Broad bean seeds… I don't think I have any left and I generally don't save any. I have a heap of spring bulbs and/or corms to plant… 250 ranunculus which are my fave flower… I'm still wanting to get some larkspur/delphiniums going.. thus far i've had no luck… the list is endless!!! I am in an arid zone even though I thought I was in cool zone… maybe I'm kind of in both.. Some seeds I buy don't even say I can plant some seeds ANY month but I still try anyway!!! lol
I’m amazed that your tomatoes aren’t burnt to a crisp! Mine did not fair well with the summer sun and will all be coming out this weekend.
Is there any trick to avoid them getting sun scolded out in the open like that?

Have a question about garlic! I have cloves left from last years harvest, do I need to vernalize them before planting or just plant them. (I'm in Melton VIC if this helps, I have totally forgot I put them aside to plant, and now it's time to plant! Usually I buy bulbs yearly to plant but had enough of a harvest last year to plant what I harvested. How time flies) They're really good decent sized cloves, we're eating the rest! Please tell me I haven't missed my window. If I need to chill them in the fridge they wont be in until half way through May!!!!!
I’ve decided to direct sow. Last Year I couldn’t keep up with the amount of seedlings and had to get rid of a lot of them and the extremely hot day wiped a lot of them out. It’s all trial and error. I tell myself to work smart, not hard.
None of my seeds germinated and they never dried out. I’ve heard so many people say this
I’m 9b in se Queensland and doing much the same as you. Brussels in last month and I even managed to over summer here so I’ll hopefully get some Brussels this year. Glad you’ve had some rain. We’d gladly give you a bit of ours. Overflowed my rain gauge with over 175mm in the last two days. ☔️
As per usual, very similar over here (hot summers, cold winters) been harvesting lots & finally today got my version 2 of the Brassica cover finished & in place (just to redo the drippers) Plenty of Brassica seedlings on the go & as per usual some cheeky late tomato seedlings ready to be potted up before going out. I do have shade cloth over my tomato trellis so hopefully I can extend them further into Winter than usual. It seems I am experimenting a lot these days trying ylto extend the growing period of a lot of my veggies. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't (just like germination seedlings)
On that note, I'm waiting on the delivery of my new grow tent (a Birthday gift) I've re-organised my set up ready & waiting for it. I can't wait to shift the seedlings into it & in another area to make things easier (plus I'll get back a work bench in a shed fir it's intended use instead of it being covered with seedlings, lights on top & a fan going.

Hi Amy, I have only just found you.I am in Blue Mountains NSW. Just about to plant my garlic and have decided for the first time to plant some winter crops and see how they do. Had massive tomato crops this year and still have so many , like hundreds, that I don't think will ripen…we'll see. Glad to 'meet' you. Happy gardening Cheers, Rhonda
Thanks Amy I really need to help my kids with food I'm a grandma who knows nothing about gardens. Your advice is very valuable to me for when to sew seeds and when to put them in the ground. I'm in upper Yarra valley.
My number one vegetable to sow this season will be beetroot. Peas come a close second.

I had a patch of garden bed that only had 15cm soil, then solid, hard clay. I used it as my cutting bed. I continually planted cutting in it with the attitude that if it grows, that’s great, if it doesn’t, then it hasn’t cost me anything. I know the things that grow will be hardy and look after themselves. Over 5 years I had some lovely plants to transplant. 30 years later it is the most beautiful bed of flowers and bushes, and even a self sown echium tree growing in it about 7 mts tall 🌸🌿

Before I watch the whole video I'm going to ask this question: Is there a good list on which seeds/seedlings that I can grow month to month? I'm setting up about 8 1200mmx900mmx300mm garden plots with straw for the bulk and potting mix on top. I'm getting into this because of the Iranian war and trying to get ahead of the inflation and diesel shortage which will bump up the price of everything in the months to come. I'm from a little town in Victoria called Wonthaggi. I'm looking for helpful advice on seeds and i want to set up a monthly reminder at the start of the month so I know what to do.
