People in Longsight said litter louts are using an alleyway on their street as a dump – with cars driving past and people throwing full bin bags of rubbish.

Neighbours on Siddall Street said the issue happens regularly and has attracted ‘massive’ rats to the area who feed on the waste. They said they’ve become ‘exhausted’ from having to keep reporting the issues to the council.

The area affected is an alleyway at the back of Siddall Street, behind a row of terraced houses, and a side passage half way along the street where there are communal bins between properties.

A resident named Jackie, aged 60, said: “People drive down, throw bin bags, and drive away. We’re reporting this all the time, but we’re getting exhausted.”

Residents said fly-tippers have left mattresses, nappies, full black bin bags, and even an entire wardrobe in the alleyway.

They say they’re having to spend ‘hours’ cleaning up the mess themselves to keep the area looking nice.

Jackie added: “We’ve had rats here, if you leave rubbish on the street it just attracts vermin. The rats are massive, they’re like the size of guinea pigs, and they’re feeding off the food and rubbish being dumped.

“I lost the use of my garden for 12 months because of the rats, I refused to go in it. My housing association helped me to stop them from getting into the house.”

Alisia, aged 19, lives on Siddall Street with her mum.

She said: “There are people from who knows where getting their kids to come here and throw their rubbish, it’s a big problem.

“My mum has spent so much time cleaning this to make it look better. We see people who don’t even live around here use it to throw their rubbish.”

Both the residents said they’ve seen the bin men trying to help out too, by using brushes to keep the area clean after they’ve removed the rubbish.

A Manchester council spokesperson said: “At the passageway on Swallow Street, bin collections take place several times each week, and any extra waste left outside the bins is removed as part of follow‑up clean‑ups.

“We want to remind residents to always consider their neighbours and working together to keep their communities clean.”

Another resident in the area, who wanted to stay anonymous, spoke about issues on nearby Stockport Road.

They said old washing machines and cookers are being left on the pavement near a bus stop.

Local businesses in the area said they thought the white goods belong to a nearby business, who did not respond to comments.

The Manchester council spokesperson added: “We are aware of issues in this area, but there has been insufficient evidence during our previous investigations to enable enforcement action to be taken.

“The current enquiries have been logged and we are investigating with a view to determining what further action may be reasonable and appropriate.

“We take these issues seriously and would encourage residents and businesses to report them.”
