KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Kansas City Community Gardens opened its annual Tomato Days sale this morning, April 23, drawing crowds of gardeners who lined up as early as 6 a.m. to purchase plants and supplies.
The sale offers tomato plants and fertilizer to help gardeners stock up for the growing season.
Jennifer Meyer, executive director of Kansas City Community Gardens, said the event draws significant crowds each year.
“This really is like Black Friday in the gardening world,” Meyer said. “It is normal for us to have cars lining up at 6 a.m., and there is always a throng of people at the gate.”
Victoria Hudson has attended Tomato Days for 10 years.

“Tomato Days is a really good day. You get a lot of variety of tomatoes,” Hudson said. “And it’s nothing like fresh tomatoes out of the backyard in your garden.”
Vanessa Adams has been coming to the sale for five years and arrived early this morning.
“I’ve been coming here for about five years. I came in early because my mom’s on a budget, my family’s on a budget, and I tend to grow so they can eat fresh food,” Adams said.
Meyer said the garden aims to provide access to fresh food as grocery costs continue to rise.
“We know that everybody is feeling the pinch at the grocery register these days,” Meyer said. “At KCCG, what we do is make growing your own food accessible so that you can have those healthy foods just a backyard away.”

Garden workers said plants will be available for several more weeks.
