Seabrook
Seabrook is a great stop on your self-guided garden tour of Grays Harbor! The city has a New Urban design, with nearly 50% of the town’s land being preserved in forest, wetland and stream corridors. They won the grand prize for New Urban design in the 2026 Charter Awards.
“My wife Laura and I wanted to raise our kids in a walkable neighborhood, somewhere they could safely explore, with a strong sense of community and ideally, by the ocean,” shares Case Roloff, Seabrook CEO and town founder. “We learned about the art of town building from Seaside, Florida, and were inspired to build our own town with New Urbanism principles on the Washington Coast. In 2002, we found an opportunity with 250 acres of overlogged land and self-financed to get the project going. In 2003, we started designing and building what would become a sustainable haven for full-time residents, vacationers, and day trippers and a walkable urban oasis seamlessly woven into nature.”
With over 18 parks, it’s a great place to stop and enjoy nature. Over 200 acres with hiking and biking trails are waiting for you to explore. Stephen Poulakos, Seabrook vice president, says these are his favorite parks for garden lovers:
The Garden & Woodland Promenades – Both located in Seabrook’s oldest neighborhood, The Greenway District. The Woodland Promenade represents a native coastal forest transitioning from the years of logging pre-dating Seabrook’s existence to today, where it educates about what a coastal forest should look like.
The Garden Promenade, located just past the Woodland Promenade and connected by Meriweather Square, also features a native perennial garden and a rain garden that educates visitors about coastal plants, shrubs, and trees. The rain garden captures water runoff, slows it down, and allows it to percolate back into the watershed. This reduces creek erosion and ensures the water released to the ocean and adjacent waterways is clean and sediment-free.
Meadowview Park is one of Seabrook’s most diverse parks. In many ways, it is like many parks in one. First, it features a large manicured event lawn for community-based events and games. In addition, it has an oval meditation garden with fragrant plants bound in a large cedar hedge for quiet reflection. The park’s meadow consists of sweet meadowgrass and a large display of native flowering Pacific Northwest perennials like lupine, foxglove and yarrow.
And don’t miss the spiraling observation mound that allows one to enjoy cozy times by the custom fireglobe firepit while surveying the Elk Creek corridor just beyond. Early May-July is a great time to see the wildflower display.
While in Seabrook, check out the Gnome Trail! Located at Compass Street in Pacific Beach, the Gnome Trail is actually a series of interconnected trails, with cute fairy and gnome homes created by visitors and residents alike! Stephen notes it’s a moderately difficult path that winds down to the Elk Creek Beach Access.
Seabrook invites people to build a gnome home and add it to the Gnome Trail! Their guidelines are simple: create a house out of natural items you’ve found in the area. They recommend:
driftwood from the beach
sticks and moss from the forest
tie together with dune grass. (gloves are recommended for handling the dune grass as it can cut!)
Plan your trip now and spend some time in nature. Soaking in fresh salt air and the smell of spring plants will melt away the workday stress in no time.
