Achieving a perfectly lush lawn isn’t solely about how frequently you mow; it’s equally about when you do it. Cutting your grass at the wrong time could actually be causing more damage than good.
While it might appear to be a straightforward task you can tackle at any point, the precise time of day you cut your lawn can have a considerable impact on its health, colour, and overall resilience. Grass can turn brown, rot, or develop disease if it’s cut during extremely hot or wet conditions. Cutting it too short or at the wrong frequency also weakens the roots, leaving it far more susceptible to weeds and drought.

According to experts at Hayter, who have been manufacturing mowers for over 75 years, April to May is the key time to start cutting your grass.
They elaborated: “When the cutting season begins, grass growth will still be slower than in the summer months due to the shorter nights and lower average temperatures.
“This is why you should begin by mowing every two weeks with a higher cutting height enabled, shortening to every 10 days and eventually weekly around mid-May, when the weather is consistently above 10°C.”
But what is the exact time in the day when you should mow your lawn?
Hayter experts revealed that the ideal time to mow the lawn is from mid-morning to early evening. However, this can vary depending on sunlight and temperature.

They added: “It’s also important to consider which direction your garden is facing, as south-facing gardens will be exposed to sunlight until slightly later in the day.
“As you get towards the end of the mowing season, mow when the sun is at its highest or when the weather is forecast to be warmest.”
Ivana Agustina, Head of Project Management at ShrubHub, an award-winning online landscape design service, also acknowledges that homeowners frequently cut their grass at the wrong time, as reported by the Express.
During spring, Ivana advises mowing between 9am and 11am, once the morning dew has evaporated, and temperatures remain cool, enabling clean cuts without placing stress on the grass.
Cutting before 8am can result in uneven trimming owing to moisture, while mowing between 2pm and 4pm risks harming the lawn in peak heat and diminishing moisture retention.

Ivana explained: “We often see homeowners puzzled by patchy, yellowing grass, even when they’re following all the other rules.
“More often than not, the problem comes down to when they’re mowing. Simply shifting your schedule by a couple of hours can help your lawn stay resilient against weeds, disease, and heat damage.
“Lawns are surprisingly forgiving, though. If you’ve been cutting at less-than-ideal times, there’s still plenty of opportunity to adjust your routine and start seeing real improvements this season.”
