R. “Quakeress”

R. ‘Quakeress’

I have a friend that every year when her plant blooms at the bottom of her steps, I threaten to dig it out. lol It’s 35 years old now and this is just one plant! What’s so unique about this cultivar, is it is a striking bi-color Azalea. Yes you heard me right, Azaleas are Rhododendrons. The only other place I have seen this is the Seattle Japanese Garden/ Arboretum, located on the west side of the pond and infrequently seen in Pacific Northwest gardens. I have looked around but it may have to be special ordered. It is an evergreen shrub, that requires well- drained, acidic soil and partial shade.

Appearance: ‘Quakeress’ features blooms that often show two contrasting colors, typically pink and white. You will do a double take. It blooms in May or late April if it’s warmer. Stunning shrub.

Care Requirements: ‘Quakeress’ is sensitive to dry soil, requiring moist organic-rich soil and regular watering. She told me she bought three but only this one survived. So don’t let them get too dry.

Location: I would say dappled sunlight, especially in the hot afternoon sun. Best planted where it receives the morning sun and afternoon shade. It does like bright filtered light though. Too shady and not as abundant blooms.

Size: 6 feet in ten years. Yes this is one plant, so give some room. Habit: Upright to spreading.
