A volunteer workday is scheduled for Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the McKinleyville Botanical Garden. These workdays are held the second Friday and fourth Sunday of the month April through October unless it’s raining. This small garden features plants that attract pollinators and birds. Volunteers get hands-on experience working with native plants and can connect with other nature lovers, too. Bring a bucket and tool, if you can. Once volunteers have helped at least once, they can work whenever they like. The McKinleyville Botanical Garden is under the auspices of Parks and Recreation Department at McKinleyville Community Services District. To get to the garden, go west on Hiller Road to the parking lot for Hammond Trail/the soccer field and dog park. The garden is adjacent to children’s playground. Pictured is one of the flowers at the garden now, the red flowering currant, Ribes sanguineum.
