I'm planning to convert a corner of my back yard, currently with grass, into a paved grill area (smoker, 2 grills). I want to have some light there, and willing to dig and run a conduit to the area. But how to design the lights?? I don't want to dig poles (I put a few years ago a fence there, and the digging was a nightmare due to tons of tree roots). Any ideas on which lights to use? Maybe metal poles coming out from a box?

You could try cementing posts into the bottom of a couple of planters and hanging string lights from those posts, or you could mount some type of wall sconces on your fence.

How about some freestanding lights with articulated heads to you can move where you need them and aim the light?

Feit Edison string lights from Costco, they come in 45 ft lengths you can chain 3 or 4 together I think.. Kasa KO-405 smart outlet can control on/off AND dim them, all from your phone, schedule or a voice assistant.

We just used 4x4s and some post stakes (there are cheap and expensive ones, we used the expensive ones because they seemed super durable) and strung string lights that plug into a lawn equipment battery & converter. I like that they *aren’t* solar so we can turn them off when we go in and not bother the wildlife (as much).

We didn’t want to go the dig/cement route or run a wire as we have longer term plans. And I kept reading about how planter versions fall over.
