Visitor Numbers And Community Impact Since 2021
Since opening in 2021, more than 2.49 million people have visited the 154-acre garden. Created with careful restoration and expert planting, it has quickly become a key cultural and environmental asset for Salford and Greater Manchester.
Salford Free Tuesdays And Wellbeing Programmes
More than 86,000 Salford residents have attended through Salford Free Tuesdays. Nearly 150 wellbeing groups have also visited, with structured programmes delivering:
Almost 850 facilitated wellbeing sessionsOver 1,500 Community Grow sessionsAround 250 referrals to the Gardening for Wellbeing programme
These initiatives support confidence building, skills development and improved mental health through nature-based activity.
Volunteers And Education Initiatives
The volunteer team now includes 255 individuals working across 33 roles, contributing more than 121,000 hours since 2021.
Educational outreach has supported 44,494 free school visits, helping children engage with horticulture, conservation and outdoor learning in a meaningful way.
Biodiversity Gains And Ecological Transformation
Bridgewater’s ecological transformation has also been remarkable. Seven new ponds, more than 2,283 metres of hedgerows, and a revitalised Victoria Meadow – where wildflower species have increased from 17 in 2017 to 50 – have helped boost biodiversity significantly.
Recorded bird species now stand at 53, including eight of serious conservation concern, and nine bat species are detected on site compared with just three in 2016.
Since opening, more than 500,000 plants have been added, 3,484 plant taxa recorded and over 494,703 bulbs planted.
Yangzhou Scholars’ Garden To Open This September
The anniversary celebrations also precede the opening of the Yangzhou Scholars’ Garden in September 2026. This new addition will further strengthen Bridgewater’s international horticultural connections and cultural programming.
Marcus Chilton-Jones, Head of Site, said the garden was always intended to grow skills, wellbeing and connection. Five years on, he noted, its volunteers and partners have shaped a landscape deeply rooted in community identity.
Stephen Young, Chief Executive of Salford City Council, described the venue as a source of civic pride and a cornerstone of local partnership working.
Tickets for the 18 May celebration are available via the official RHS website. Visitors are advised to book early due to expected high demand.
