If you have a small garden, its easy to think you can’t do much with it. But with careful planning even small gardens can be beautiful!. In this video I show you a simple design trick that works if all you have is a patio sized space.

First of all, if your garden is mostly hard surface, I recommend pressure washing the area. This instantly makes a difference and makes it safer to walk on. Sometimes it can look like a new patio even by giving it a good clean.

Then I construct a set of softwood planters, painting them a subtle neutral colour to show of the plants. These will become the ‘walls’ of my garden room and by putting them on casters I can change the look of my new garden whenever I want. I then plant one of them with stunning spring colours.

  1. Absolutely brilliant to see Alan on " TV" again. No one else has his way of making gardening seem achievable. I'm hoping I can watch a bunch of these back-to-back as shorts while I'm making dinner

  2. I’ll have to enjoy my planting of new plants vicariously through you Alan, as we’re going into a drought here in Australia, and as I live on tank water, every drop is precious now! So no new plants for me for a while, to the end of this year it seems 😢 and possibly beyond 😢😢😢

  3. I have a small north facing patch, i want to put in some containers like these instead of the sad lawn i have. Is there a way to work out good planter fellows that will last through until the Autumn/winter?
