They do this EVERY night. I’ve tried motion sensor lights. Ammonia. U shaped hooks. Peace offerings of treats in another part of the yard. Is chicken wire my last option? I need to save this sod
I have no experience with this but this is what I would do. Carpet the whole grass in bird netting and secure it with stakes around the perimeter. And then take it off when the grass finally roots enough that it can’t be peeled back.

I was able to ward off a possum/skunk digging in my garden by putting a Bluetooth speaker out there playing a podcast and a dog growling lol.

I’m sorry, I know they’re assholes and it’s infuriating but I’m picturing them actually doing this and for some reason I’m finding it hysterically funny.
They dig up my raised beds looking for grubs and the only thing I can do to keep them out is metal mesh pinned down on top of the soil, so yeah, chicken wire is a good option, although it won’t be fun to do.
I also have ring camera footage of one eating every single fish in my tiny backyard pond. We stopped putting fish in it because he just kept coming back and eating all of them.
They’re cute but man they are pains in the ass.

Plant natives instead of this garbage and their roots will actually penetrate the soil further than a few centimeters of tightly knit network that can be easily peeled off like a carpet.

Raccoons are showing how poorly grass roots, is attacked by grubs, and needs more than plants to look nice

They are going for the grubs. Treat for grubs, take away the food source, then they will go elsewhere.
Hopefully Probably Should

That’s not really sod, it’s roll-out carpet that pretends to be grass.
Since it’s obviously freshly loose they can smell it and know they can find tons of earthworms etc if they just get under it. That’s why it’s not all damaged – they figured out how to roll it out of the way.

Sod off!

It’s a sign, rip it up and plant beds with pollinators and other ecologically beneficial plants.

Raccoons are being helpful and telling you that lawns are rubbish and to plant a real garden, don’t bend to Victorian style, start growing food.
You have to get a motion operated night vision camera….this shit just makes me laugh. Once they eat all the grubs they will quit

Live trap. Smear peanut butter on the trigger arm and stick a couple cut in half marshmallows to it. They like sardines too, but after a couple days the smell starts to get a little out of hand.
I am in the sticks so I had a lot of area to cover with automatic Sprinklers and noise makers. I even left an AM radio on talk radio all night long for my chicks and it didn’t deter them one bit. One son of a bitch came up and destroyed a brooder box while I was working on a truck outside.

Spray beneficial nematodes. they eat the grubs the raccoons (and crows) are hunting in your sod. Arbico organics is a great source

put some wire fence flat on it ?

Lawnarchy! This is just part of seizing the means of production as they work to restore native plantings and bring down human dominance

Sodding raccoons

Not sure where you live, but here in my area (Seattle) the raccoons are going after an invasive beetle (Shafer’s Beetle) so in fact they are not being assholes but helping to prevent the spread of invasive species. Consider wherever you are at that these raccoons are going after some grub in your sod that you probably don’t want there anyway. Spraying beneficial nematodes in the spring and the fall will kill the grubs. No grubs, no raccoon digging. The raccoons are just the canaries in your coal mine telling you that you need to do something about your soil health.

We had this same problem and what finally worked was putting jars of ammonia out there with a washcloth in them to wick the smell out. They hate the smell.

Sounds like a Monty Python skit.

Chicken wire, pinned down, until the sod takes.
You gotta pull it up and loosen the new grass, otherwise it gets tangled up and rips the grass up.
