COVENT Garden surface car park in Leamington is now fully reopen.
It was partially closed while work to bring the lower tiers of the former Covent Garden multi-story car park was being carried out. This £1.2million work is now nearing completion.
The Russell Street multi-story was a land, mark in the town centre for more than 60 years. It opened in 1960 but closed in February 2023 after the discovery of major structural issues.
In its latter years It was also plagued by increasing incidents of anti-social behaviour.
Spiralling maintenance and repair costs left council chiefs with no option but to put down the barriers for good..
The Covent Garden surface car park is open 24 hours a day seven days a week and now has 89 regular spaces and eight disabled bays, which is 15 more than previously.
The newly created two level car park is expected to open in early summer, offering secure long-stay parking for up to 100 vehicles.
Warwick District Council’s neighbourhood spokesperson Coun Will Roberts said: “This centrally located car park is vital for local businesses and visitors to the town, I am therefore pleased to see the progress being made and look forward to seeing this much needed facility fully opened.”
