If you have a small garden, its easy to think you can’t do much with it. But with careful planning even small gardens can be beautiful!. In this video I show you a simple design trick that works if all you have is a patio sized space.

First of all, if your garden is mostly hard surface, I recommend pressure washing the area. This instantly makes a difference and makes it safer to walk on. Sometimes it can look like a new patio even by giving it a good clean.

Then I construct a set of softwood planters, painting them a subtle neutral colour to show of the plants. These will become the ‘walls’ of my garden room and by putting them on casters I can change the look of my new garden whenever I want. I then plant one of them with stunning spring colours.

  1. My garden tip – listen carefully to what Alan tells you, screenshot that lovely section of a garden you want in your garden and 'star' the episode you go to time and again.

  2. Pressure washing I use a circular attachment that spins around and it makes such light work compared to a jet.

  3. Definitely an older house over a new build! These housing estates are put up so cheap and fast

  4. Love the boxes just came at the right time for me Alan I will do this now for my front garden then look at the back next . Thank you . G McLellan .

  5. Looks amazing, buying the planter, compost and mature plants like that would be £400-£500. Not within my budget, sadly.

  6. Beautiful container, can’t wait to see more of your new garden ideas, tips and tricks. I have greenhouse envy 😂 And for some reason watching someone jet wash a patio is very hypnotic. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Hi Alan. Love watching your garden transformations. I have a Hellebore that I want to move, when is the best time to do this? Thank you

  8. It's going to be lovely all summer. Well done.
    I've been keeping an apartment balcony vegetable, herb and flower garden for nearly 30 years (zone 5a Ontario). Counting the dozen herbs and a variety of flowers I'll be growing 50 different varieties of fruits and vegetables. {Canadian saffron, strawberries, Jerusalem artichokes, tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, beans, ground cherry, giant sunflower, summer & winter squash, sweet potatoes, and a whole bunch of different flowers}

    The biggest game changer for me was choosing smaller varieties like cherry or grape tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. as well as using oya's in every planter. Oya is Spanish for 'pot'; you can use any small clay pot to sink into the soil up to the rim, tamp down compost to cover the drain hole. Fill the oya when you do your daily watering; eventually the roots will grow to surround the oya and they can drink when they need to.

    Somehow I'm also able to wedge in seating for 4 and a compost bin.

  9. David Attenborough has a new series Sercret Garden that is about wildlife in gardens. i know you will love it as it will appeal to the environmentalist in you ! Maybe you could do a show together?

  10. Good morning, I love taking care of flowers, I'm from Brazil and I'm watching your videos. It's a shame that it's not possible to translate. Wash the aniseed with a very light spray of the steamer, otherwise it will break. Congratulations on your 💘

  11. its so nice to see you doing what you do best I rember when you took over from Jeff on gardeners world I thought that it was going to be the end of the programme for me after geof passed away but no you made it just as good so thank for all the years of teaching us the right way to garden best of luck from south Wales

  12. I was with you right up til the Mexican Feather Grass. In California it is terribly invasive. I’ve seen yards that started with just a few plants and the next thing you know, it’s all over the garden. Maybe not where you’re gardening?
