I've never really had plants so I'm looking for advice. I received this plant from a friend when I got a job with my own office and wanted a green friend. He seems to be growing taller and I'm wondering if he could use a larger pot? It seems like you can see part of it pushing against the jar in the 2nd photo? For reference the jar is 3.5 inch tall and 4 inch wide.

It needs drainage. The candle jar is cute but it will get root rot from the soil remains too wet. The size would be fine for a while. When the roots are bound up a bit the plant will focus on leaf growth.

Not bigger, but please use a pot with drainage holes.

The size is totally fine. It looks like they’re newly planted propogations, so there’s probably plenty of room for the roots to grow. Like others have said, it will be hard to thrive with no drainage. It’s a pothos so it’s hardy and can be okay in the jar, but I would just be cautious with how often and how much you are watering to avoid overwatering.

If this is at work, you might be better off taking the soil out and just filling it with water, since there’s no drainage. It will do just fine.

I have plenty of plants in pots without drainage so it’s not the worst, just don’t overwater. Size is fine.

You’re just asking for trouble with no drainage.

Could just repot into smaller nuesery pot and use the candle jar as decorative 🙂

no, it needs a proper pot with drainage

As others have said, no drainage is possible, especially with a chunky/perlite-heavy soil mix that helps the drying out process, but overall it can be harder to manage for beginners. Pothos like to dry out in between waterings so drainage holes and terracotta pots are helpful.

If you want to keep it as is for now, don’t be afraid to stick your finger in the soil to check the humidity level before giving it more water !

I don’t think it needs a bigger pot, my happiest pothos plants are **packed** and they last a while before needing an upgrade 🙂

It needs drainage. Meaning holes, not rocks in the bottom.

With these I use a nursery pot with drainage holes then place them in my candles to make them look cute!

I would personally report them in a smaller pot closer together. Some plants like to be closer together

Although a plant staying alive in a pot without drainage is possible, if you want it to thrive without worrying, you should repot it into another pot, maybe even a plastic nursery pot and perhaps use the jar as a cache pot. I don’t think that jar is currently too small

Don’t base pot size on the leaves and stems, base it on the root ball. It will need repotted when you have a bunch of roots pressed against the sides and bottom of the pot. That said, it does need a new pot, but not for size reasons: no drainage holes is a recipe for disaster for the vast majority of plants.

Pothos generally handle anything you throw at them so you have 3 options –
    1. Keep as is, water only when soil feels dry, and water 1/4th the pot’s volume only
    2. Take out the plants, take out the soil. Refill pot with water and keep the plant in the water
    3. Take out the plants, transfer to a small nursery container and then place nursery container in your pot

Your nameeeee is right thereeeee in the photo Stefanie

  17. Move it to a pot with drainage holes, but the same size as that. You’re going to get root rot if you leave it in that.

Pothos like to be root bound. Unless it’s in a nursery pot and roots are coming out the bottom, don’t repot.

I bought a mortar/ tile bit for my drill. Makes me feel like master of my own universe to add holes to drainless pots. Mwaaa ha haaaa.

As a fellow dumbass who put smaller plants in candles like this …

I put a lot of rocks in the bottom. Are these “candle pots” okay until they get bigger? They’re too small for a larger pot and they were in seedling sized pots before
