The nebari is just insane for a neglected tree that has been kept inside a friggin asbestos container, surrounded by ivy and pieces of slate everywhere. I know acer dissectum is not really popular but I‘m sure this is going to be a nice han-kengai or shakan in a couple of years. For context, I‘m a woodworking teacher and in our facility we also have landscapers and a huge yard. My colleagues know I’m starting with bonsai so they offered me to take

care of this tree. I‘m extremely grateful!

(Sorry about the bad pictures, I was in a rush and quite excited)

Beautiful shape! Can’t wait for an update photo in a few months!

  2. Glad you are excited about it! Show us what you end up doing with it.

I would rate this more like an opal than a diamond….some niche potential but probably not a “crown jewel”. As others have mentioned the graft will likely become problematic with this one. Although the cambium is growing at relatively similar rates…the root stock is still growing faster and this will get more dramatic over time. A color difference between the two types of tissue is also likely incoming. Finally, dissectum is beautiful but difficult to bonsai. You will likely struggle to get the response you want from this foliage type.

But if you love it…that is 95% of bonsai success….being committed to giving the tree all the care it needs. Good luck!

That’s about as clean a graft as you could get. It’s OK if it doesn’t bother you. I’d personally air layer the top and take advantage of the root stock’s naturally great nebari and taper. But that’s all up to you.
