Spring is in full bloom, and Tulsa residents looking to start a garden can turn to an unexpected place for help: their local library.

The Tulsa City-County Library system is offering free seed packets at multiple locations, giving gardeners of all experience levels a chance to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers at home.

How the seed library works

The Seed Library program is available at nine Tulsa library locations. Visitors can check out up to 15 seed packets per season at no cost.

The selection includes vegetables, herbs and flowers, with options such as heirloom and open-pollinated varieties that are well-suited for Oklahoma growing conditions.

Making gardening accessible

Library staff say the program is designed to make gardening easier for beginners while still offering value to experienced growers.

“It’s become a lot of people’s lives, you know, just as coming to the library to get books is a part of people’s absolute routine, coming to look at the seed library seeds is a part of the springtime ritual,” said Johanna Burton with the Tulsa City-County Library.

Resources for new gardeners

For those unsure where to begin, the library also provides educational materials and tips to help people successfully plant and maintain their gardens.

How the program sustains itself

Participants are encouraged to save seeds from their harvest and return a portion to the library. That helps keep the program stocked and available for others in future seasons.

What to know before you go

Seed availability changes throughout the season and depends on supply, so some varieties may be limited or unavailable at times.
