KUALA LUMPUR — The 71-year-old man arrested for the fatal shooting of three people in a Kota Tinggi restaurant in Johor was a gardener, who is now in remand for seven days.

The remand order, effective today, was applied for by the case investigating officer Assistant Superintendent Nor Azizi Indzam, and was issued by Magistrate Nurkhalida Farhana Abu Bakar at the Kota Tinggi magistrate’s court this morning.

Berita Harian’s report on the remand proceedings today said that the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

The senior citizen had a valid firearm licence, issued to him for agricultural purposes, specifically for protecting crops, police yesterday revealed.

Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Asad said the man fired shots that killed two local men and a Vietnamese woman, using a shotgun identified as a Benelli M/ Super bearing serial number M104817. The three victims were between the ages of 37 and 63.

The incident occurred at a restaurant in Taman Kota Jaya, Kota Tinggi, at around 1.30pm yesterday. The suspect was arrested about half an hour later just 200 metres from the site of the shootings.

Police have ruled out terrorism or gang activity and are investigating personal debt issues as a likely motive, Ab Rahaman said yesterday. — April 20, 2026
