A lawn overrun with dandelions ranks amongst the most frustrating aspects of garden ownership. This especially troublesome lawn weed can ruin the appearance of your pristine turf if it suddenly appears. Even more problematic, they can emerge throughout the entire year but become particularly troublesome from April through to October.
Once dandelions have taken hold in your lawn, eliminating them demands a comprehensive and carefully timed strategy.
Dandelions can multiply rapidly via their extensive taproots and wind-dispersed seeds, making total removal quite difficult.
While manual weeding proves highly successful for minor dandelion problems, it’s unsuitable for widespread invasions.
Instead, gardening specialists maintain that the optimal answer is deploying a particular potent product that not only eliminates dandelions but simultaneously makes grass greener, denser and more robust – a weed and feed fertiliser.

Weed and feed fertiliser serves as a dual-purpose treatment that “kills weeds at the root” while nourishing grass so it becomes “instantly greener and thicker”, according to specialists at The Grass People.
Experts from Turf Online confirmed that weed and feed products “will deal with the dandelion problem while giving a lawn a boost”.
They continued: “There are special tools which can be used to uproot them, but this will inevitably be more laborious and less effective.”
Professionals at Home Turf Lawn Care Service emphasised that keeping your lawn in good condition is the “best defence” against dandelions invading your turf.
Fertilising doesn’t just assist in “maintaining a healthy lawn”, it also “helps your lawn to become thicker and denser”, creating shade that prevents dandelion seeds from penetrating the soil.
The Grass People emphasised that “timing is crucial” when it comes to weed and feed treatment application.
They said: “Applying the product at the right time ensures maximum effectiveness in eliminating weeds and promoting healthy grass growth.”
April represents the “ideal time to get a first application of weed and feed down on your lawn as the grass begins to grow again after dormancy in winter.
Throughout this period, weeds become widespread, which is why using this fertiliser proves essential in stopping them from dominating your lawn.
Never apply on freshly seeded lawns; only use on lawns aged six months or more. Young grass will be too delicate for this type of treatment.
After you’ve applied this fertiliser, make certain you water it in thoroughly or apply just before rainfall; otherwise, you risk scorching your lawn.
Furthermore, you should steer clear of applying during extremely warm weather. It’s preferable to apply during cooler evenings or on cloudy days.
